Sex and the City 2: Movie & Style Analysis!

20 May

After two years of waiting, Sex and the City fans can rejoice in another heaping dose of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda, while fashion fans can enjoy a visually stimulating fashion show that travels from New York City to Abu Dhabi.

In the sequel, the four heroines discover what happens after you say “I do”. Feeling stuck in the traditional roles of marriage and motherhood and struggling with relationship monotony, balancing work with family and losing a sense of self, the ladies take an extravagant trip to Abu Dhabi, where they let loose, rediscover their friendship and bump into old flames.

Like the first film, Sex and the City 2 is driven by fashion. However, whereas the first film revolved around designer ensembles from Proenza Schouler, Lanvin and Alaïa, and wedding dresses from Oscar de la Renta, Christian Lacroix and Vivienne Westwood, Sex and the City 2 focuses more on developing each character’s personal style.

The Abu Dhabi trip, in particular, allows stylist Patricia Field to experiment with looks inspired by the Middle East, Morocco, India and mid-century cinema and apply them to each character differently. Though many ensembles could border on being too costumey, Field’s creations are both aspirational and whimsical, allowing viewers to truly appreciate the fashion as a character in itself.
